Review: Frightened Rabbit @ Echoplex

First, fuck the Echoplex for 1) mixing the audio so it sounded best by the bar and not at the stage and 2) for having the house right speakers blown.

That said, FR rocked. Intimate, passionate, thrilling was their performance. They were spot on but not just re-producing the album live on stage. They were giving the audience the experience they wanted, something the previous band (called something like “pinto beans”) couldn’t come close to doing. The moment of the show came when Scott stepped past the mic and sang “Poke” to the front row.

It’s a pity these guys won’t be back in LA for another year. Here’s hoping they come back to SXSW in March so I can see them there.

First, I was incredibly bummed that I only caught the last few bars of The Kills. I can’t believe I missed them.

As for The Raconteurs, they’re very talented but does every song have to sound like an ADD mash-up of four Zepplin tunes? Relax, I’m not a hater but by the middle of their second set I kept asking myself, “didn’t they already play that song?”

Um… well… I want to say something positive… how about this: the first half of Beck’s set rocked and… um… it was a beautiful night to be at The Hollywood Bowl. Do I have to write more? No? Great. End transmission.

I should mention that when I first got into Feist, I saw her perform at the Troubadour (take your first apartment and multiply it by 2, maybe 4). I was pressed right up against the stage, her “costume” was a pair of gold slippers and the defining adjective was “intimate.” For me, that’s the perfect way to see her.

At the Bowl, I was about a 1/3 of the way from the front, she was wearing a white rock star suit and she had these overhead hand-crafted projections that unrolled while she played. Um, yeah, I think I still prefer the first way I saw her.

But Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings opened for her and they rocked the goddamn house! Make every attempt to see them when they hit your town (and man, do they hit it).

At my second show at The Greek in as many weeks, I caught Robert Plant & Alison Krauss with T-Bone Burnett in the backing band. Wow! Yeah, it was awesome to hear a bluegrass version of “Black Dog” and their cover of “The Battle of Evermore” was note perfect but the sheer beauty of the songs and the musical talent was well worth the price of admission (full disclosure: a friend hooked me up with free tickets). Robert Plant still has his rock n’ roll swagger and Alison Krauss sounds like an angel. Okay, it’s not a full throttle rock act but this show might just be the gem of the summer.

Thievery Corporation played the Hollywood Bowl… correction, they rocked the bowl and got every @$$ shaking. Their openers varied. I missed the first act but came in just after Los Amigos Invicibles hit the stage. Holy @#$%! These guys were amazing. You must (MUST) find see these guys when they play your local club (and be ready to groove). Bebel Gilberto… um… she’s very dramatic… she didn’t sound that good… and she strikes me as… I’ll just end this here.

I forgot to post about this concert.

First, I’m a huge fan of The Kills. I’ve seen them live 4 times and I feel like I could see them a hundred more. They never disappoint… except this wasn’t their best show. For some reason they seemed less involved, less driven to rock your f**king world.

That said, you should absolutely check them out while they’re on tour. Their albums can’t compare to their live shows.
